Cat sanctuary uses company’s mobile ad hoc network to support virtual tours, monitor animals for increased education and awareness
Persistent Systems, LLC (“Persistent”) a leader in mobile ad hoc networking (MANET) technology, announced today, that it has successfully deployed its Wave Relay® network across Carolina Tiger Rescue, a 501(C)3 nonprofit wildlife sanctuary for saving and protecting wild cats in Pittsboro, North Carolina.
Just a few hours from Persistent’s office in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Carolina Tiger Rescue is home to tigers, lions, cougars, red wolves, and other species. Since January of this year, Persistent’s Wave Relay® MANET has delivered continuous connectivity across more than 55 acres of dense tree canopy and rugged terrain, enabling virtual tours and remote animal monitoring.
“We are honored that the Wave Relay® MANET is helping Carolina Tiger Rescue increase awareness of their mission,” said Robert Ross, Technical Project Manager at Persistent Systems. “Due to the terrain, the sanctuary previously struggled with spotty coverage, which limited their ability to share their story with the world. With our network, they can now live-stream broadcasts and post updates to a much broader audience, improving education and engagement.”
So far, Carolina Tiger Rescue has seen success with the network, live-streaming animal feeds to classrooms and their Facebook page. More importantly, the sanctuary now benefits from constant connectivity enabling them to study animal behavior and monitor health conditions 24/7. Currently, the network is being used to monitor the health of a tiger with a genetic disorder.
Many of the sanctuary’s animals were rescued from the exotic pet trade, where they were kept by private owners, roadside zoos, traveling circuses, and other unaccredited facilities. After being abandoned, surrendered, or confiscated, these animals find refuge at Carolina Tiger Rescue, where they can live safely and comfortably.
“I knew we had to bring what we are doing here to the outside world,” said Kris Marino, Executive Director at Carolina Tiger Rescue. “When children are exposed to animals at a young age, they develop empathy and care for others – qualities our world desperately needs. By sharing our animals through live streams, we can reach and educate more people, promote wildlife conservation, and inspire compassion.”
As today marks International Tiger Day, we aim to help bring awareness to this critically endangered species and are excited to continue supporting this effort by deploying additional cameras and extending network coverage to a new 16,000-square-foot visitor and education center currently under development.
Public Tours of the Carolina Tiger Sanctuary can be booked via their official website.
